As for re-installing the OS, either install it from an old CD (or floppy) or something, then update it, or buy a new OS altogether.

System backups to CD's or flash drives might help in the future

 

Ill tell ya this - if your computer hosed up bad enough to do that - installing a new OS on it isn't going to keep it from happening again. I'd say your drive is messed up, and to get a new one as step 1 in your repair process.

Unfortunately, torrents are now more unreliable as they have ever been. My suggestion (I have a dell so I know what I am talking about, lol) is to find a boot disk of whatever operating system you had before (legally or not) because your serial is linked to your motherboard. As long as you have the serial to your OS it will work (and I assume if you installed it yourself you could try to remember where you put the packaging, or if you did not, try to look on the side of your tower, as the serial sticker is normally stuck there). However, I don't see much success with torrents now that the government is trying to take over the world. I would advise you also check your memory, as I have had some stupid issues with memory problems (PC basically tries to wipe itself to fix the issue). If you bought your OS with your computer from a large company, you could give them a call and see if they can help you out getting a new boot disk. This is all coming from my experience dealing with a 3 year old dell laptop that does not cease to have hardware failures.

Glad it's back to working. If it is under warranty still (maybe?) I would get the HDD replaced by Dell simply to cover costs. However, I would still be wary of their parts. I purchased my laptop through a company account and got next-day at-home repair service while under warranty. I did notice, however, that Dell was using refurbished parts for replacements (which is very sketchy considering the NEW part failed in the first place). I have had 3 HDD failures, a mobo failure, and 3 memory stick failures since I got it. Now, most of my components are aftermarket. I say all of that to really recommend that you consider buying a new HDD yourself. I know there are a lot more options out there if you go aftermarket. I downgraded from a 320gb to an 80 and it is probably the best decision I've made. Makes things run that much faster. Overall, you are looking at maybe $50-100 depending on the size and speed you choose. I recommend TigerDirect or Newegg.

I would like to make an inquiry... I've had some issues with my laptop overheating. Not sure what the case is (I am assuming it is over-use of my processor or the like). I recently had to downgrade to 4gb of ram and I know it's been running a little hot since, plus my rubber feet are gone on the back. Could any of what I described be the case?

 

What model dell laptop is it? Some of them just have overheating issues.

 

I have the same problem with my Dell. It shuts off suddenly but I noticed it happens when its plugged into a power kutlet, so occassionally I let it run on. Batter and as soon as the battery low notification appears, I plug it in. Works for me.

 

I noticed the same thing... I think it the battery heats up and messes with the temperature... Studio 1555 (world's worst laptop, have had numerous hardware failures).

 

Essentially, the battery is a resistor that stores the energy forced into it.
