If you were looking for a computer you can edit in the future, and make attempts at upgrading it, I would go with the desktop. You get more graphics and component options with a desktop, and a computer like this has more than enough room for improvement so you can play skyrim on the highest graphics setting. If you are going for portability and mobility, then I would suggest getting a gaming laptop. Unfortunately you won't be able to upgrade the computer much due to its compact size, but there are some components you can change out or expand on to a degree. I know there are some very powerful laptops out there, It is just a matter of finding the right price for the right equipment. I wish you luck DannyLb, I hope you find what you're looking for.
Still, I think 7 compares no where close to XP. XP while older has a simpler layout, with games Xp can run just about any games as long as it has the system requirements. 7, while has smooth gameplay, sometimes can not run because of hardware compatablity problems. Then there's blue screens, with XP you normally just have to reset the system or hardware to fix the problems. With 7 it's a bit more difficult to fix, sometimes you have to reinstall the entire system just to get it to work. When I use Windows 7, it makes me feel asthough they took a lot of freedom awat from my use, so I switched back to XP due to this.
Also not to mention, older games were formatted differently. XP allowed leeway for semi-older games, and some websites even sponsored a reformatted patch so XP could run the game. Windows 7, even with compatibility mode, sometimes cant run old games, unless you can format the game on your own, then there is no way yo can play older games. My conclusion is that it only matters what you prefer. Some people liked XP for its simplicity and how some games were still able to run, even if they were old. Whereas some people are into the more graphic intense games, like CoD MWII, or Battlefield 3. The last thing this points at, is just what you are generally use to using.

I can do almost all those games on my computer now. If I wanted to do BF3 I would just need to upgrade my graphics card a bit better.
