Virus & Malware removal: $199 In-Store Application Installation: $29.99 Setting up your Fucking E-mail!: $49.99 I'm beginning to think Geek Squad thinks we're all Mr. Moneybags here. I mean, yes, not everyone is compter tech savvy, and we can't be expected to solve all our problems... But when they mention they'll help you set up your email for $50, install a new application for $30, or... For fucks sake, tune up your PC for at least $149... In-store! You think that ain't enough? How about the fact that calling one of their agents for these services is cheaper... And by that, I mean you talk with them online. Right, sure. Have an agent fix up your viruses over the god damn phone, or, hey, let's have him tune up your computer "Over the fucking internet!" Anyone that's a caveman with computers isn't going to understand most of this stuff online, and these prices are just really friggin high. I'm beginning to think that freelance computer enthusiasts get better business than Geek Squad does... Surely I'm not the only one to think this? http://www.geeksquad.com/services/ Just look at the Computer section of the website, and just be amazed how much they're charging. Good lord.
I worked at Best Buy for 6 months. Geek Squads answers to everything - Reformat, install over priced "Virus Protection"
most retail companies that have in-store tech work dont offer real solutions. they offer whatever the company wants to push for that week. even of you already have an AV, they will push whatever AV they have for sale. using only 10% of your 500GB HDD? lets push for 3TB HDDS! you just browse the web and check email? lets push an i-7 4770k 6-core for that gaming experience! it all comes down to what the corp office wants to put on sale. free lance has a benefit of not being coerced into that shit. for me at least, if you just need an application installed? thats all Im gonna charge you for and do for you. want me to completely build you a rig? gimme a budget, Ill give you a list of parts, and just charge you for assembly. I might even throw an OS install for free. why? because I am my own boss at that point. the downside to this is freelance do not have the legal team to fight the few monsters that do arise. we dont have the millions of dollars to spend on advertising. we can do some advertising (business cards, flyers, etc) but no tto the gran scale that most companies do. I provide solutions. I provide support. some people in this line of work that are stuck in bestbuy, do offer support and solutions, but they are a target. its all about sales. when I did tech work for a corp, we had a weekly meeting. 'this is whats on sale for x amount of weeks/days. corp wants us to sell 10 of item X, and 20 of item Z. even if a customer only needs or wants item Y, lets try to upsell to the other 2 items.'
