I used several means in order to obtain the $40,000 requirement, including growing and harvesting copious amounts of sugar cane to sell to the king, fishing and selling the fish to the king, buying and selling various items to different shops in the mall network and keeping an eye out on the auctions to try and get a profitable deal.
