RAM stands for Random Access Memory, physically in your computer it is the long thin module in slots on your motherboard. Its the working memory of your system, The more RAM you have the more information your computer can work at the same time a.k.a running faster/smoother. how it works- allows memory to be accessed at random without needing to access the preceding memory, this is faster than say a Disk Drive (hard drive) where it has to read the memory in a predetermined order. And also unlike a disk drive, information on your RAM is temporary. When power if turned off it loses stored data. Basically it is your system's temporary storage and working space for the operating system and various applications so that it does not need to pull it from your HDD every time it needs to access the information, as RAM is accessed much faster than information from your Disk drive.
